THE NEXT CHAPTER
JOURNAL ENTRY - AUGUST 2026
Some chapters are defined by what is built.
Others are defined by the people who make them possible.
As we reflect on the journey that brought us to Studio RYS, we're reminded that every meaningful story is shaped by those who choose to invest their time, talent, and belief in something larger than themselves. Few have influenced our story more profoundly than Robert Y. Sauvageau.
For more than four decades, Bob has dedicated his career to creating places that connect people, strengthen communities, and stand the test of time. Since founding RYS Architects in 1989, he built a practice grounded in creativity, integrity, service, and the belief that great design begins with listening. Those values became the foundation of the firm and continue to guide us today.
On November 1, 2026, Bob will retire from Studio RYS, concluding an extraordinary career and marking the close of a remarkable chapter, both for him and for the firm he founded.
While retirement often invites us to look back, it also offers an opportunity to appreciate the impact one person can have on the people around them. For those fortunate enough to work alongside Bob, that impact extends far beyond the buildings designed, the projects completed, or the milestones achieved.
Over the years, what began as professional respect grew into trusted friendships and enduring collaboration. Through countless projects, conversations, and shared experiences, a common vision emerged. We believed the best outcomes happened when architecture, interior architecture, and interior design were not approached as separate disciplines, but as a unified process.
That belief eventually became Studio RYS.
And while the studio continues to evolve, its foundation is rooted in the same spirit of collaboration, trust, and curiosity that Bob fostered from the very beginning.
Bob's influence can be found in the relationships he cultivated, the trust he placed in others, and his unwavering commitment to doing the right thing for clients, colleagues, and communities alike. He built a firm known not only for the work it produced, but for the integrity with which it was delivered.
Perhaps most importantly, Bob understood that lasting success comes from investing in people. He created opportunities, encouraged growth, shared his knowledge generously, and built a culture where collaboration, respect, and mentorship could flourish. Those contributions have left a lasting mark on Studio RYS and on the many individuals whose careers and lives have been enriched by his guidance.
As Bob steps into retirement, we do so with immense gratitude for the role he has played in shaping not only a successful practice, but the people within it. The greatest legacy he leaves behind is not a portfolio of work, but a culture of trust, respect, mentorship, and service.
As Studio RYS continues to evolve, we carry those lessons with us. They are woven into the way we think, the way we lead, and the way we approach every opportunity ahead. While the firm's future will naturally be different from its past, the character and values that Bob helped instill remain an enduring part of its foundation.
Because while leadership evolves, the heart of a studio is carried forward through its people, its values, and its shared commitment to something greater than themselves.
Bob's chapter as Founding Principal is coming to a close, but his influence will continue to shape the pages ahead. We are honored to carry forward the legacy he began, grateful for the foundation he built, and thankful for the trust, friendship, and example he leaves behind.
Here's to Bob, to an extraordinary career, and to the next chapter of the story he helped make possible.
